Lefkada Island

World-Class Beaches

Lefkada is famous for its west coast, where dramatic white cliffs meet deep blue water.

  • Porto Katsiki: Often ranked among the best beaches in the world. It is framed by a massive cliff and reachable via a steep set of stairs or by boat.

  • Egremni: Known for having the most incredible “neon” blue water. Since an earthquake in 2015 damaged the road, it is best reached by boat tours from Nydri or Vasiliki.

  • Kathisma: A long, organized beach perfect for those who want beach bars, umbrellas, and paragliding.

  • Agios Ioannis/Miloi: Located near the main town, these beaches are a “mecca” for kitesurfers and windsurfers due to the steady thermal winds.

Key Towns & Villages

  • Lefkada Town: The island’s capital has a distinct Venetian feel with colorful houses and a bustling pedestrian “pazzari” (market street). Don’t miss the wooden bridge, often called the “Bridge of Sighs.”

  • Nydri: The most popular tourist resort, ideal for families and the main hub for day cruises to surrounding islands like Meganisi and Skorpios (the private island formerly owned by Aristotle Onassis).

  • Vasiliki: A picturesque fishing village in the south, world-renowned for windsurfing and its laid-back harbor-side dining.

  • Karya: A traditional mountain village famous for its handmade “Karsaniko” embroidery and cool shady squares, a perfect escape from the summer heat.

Culture & Sights

  • Agia Mavra Castle: A 14th-century fortress guarding the entrance to the island.

  • Faneromeni Monastery: Perched on a hill above the town, it offers stunning views of the lagoon and houses a small maritime museum and a mini zoo.

  • Nydri Waterfalls (Dimosari): A refreshing hike through lush greenery leading to a natural swimming pool under the falls.

  • Cape Lefkatas: The southernmost tip of the island where a lighthouse stands on the site of an ancient Temple of Apollo. Legend says the poet Sappho leapt to her death here.

Travel Tips

  • Getting There: You can drive from Athens (approx. 4.5 hours) or fly into Aktion National Airport (PVK) in Preveza, which is only 20 minutes from the island.

  • Transport: A car is highly recommended to explore the winding mountain roads and reach the secluded west-coast beaches.

  • Best Time to Visit: June and September offer perfect weather with fewer crowds. August can be very busy and hot.
