Chania & Prefecture
Situated on the westernmost edge of Crete, Chania Prefecture is a stunning blend of dramatic natural landscapes and a deeply layered history. The geographic diversity includes the towering White Mountains (Lefka Ori), Samaria Gorge, Balos Lagoon, and the exotic, pink-tinted sands of Elafonisi.
At the heart of the prefecture lies its capital, Chania City, widely considered one of the most beautiful Mediterranean destinations. Its soul is the Venetian Harbor, where a 16th-century Egyptian lighthouse stands watch over a maze of narrow, cobblestone alleys filled with Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman architecture.
Heraklion & Prefecture
Heraklion (Iraklio) is the high-energy, historic capital of Crete. While it doesn’t always have the “postcard-perfect” initial charm of Chania or Rethymno, it is the island’s intellectual and historical heart. It’s a place where 4,000-year-old Minoan ruins sit just a short drive from gritty-yet-vibrant urban markets and some of the best museums in the Mediterranean.
Heraklion is the gateway to the Bronze Age. As the site of the legendary Palace of Knossos, it’s the best home base for anyone wanting to understand European history’s roots. Today, it’s a bustling hub of commerce, university life, and incredible food. It’s less of a “quiet island village” and more of a “living history museum” that hasn’t forgotten how to throw a party.
